About the Rickenbacker
The Rickenbacker Causeway is the only road connection between mainland Miami, Virginia Key, and Key Biscayne. The Miami-Dade County toll road crosses the West Bridges, William M. Powell Bridge, and Bear Cut Bridge on its way to the island.
Tolls run on SunPass and Toll-By-Plate — no cash booths. As of the October 2025 update, Miami-Dade lists the two-axle rate at $3.25 with SunPass or $6.50 with Toll-By-Plate, plus a $2.50 monthly invoice fee for Toll-By-Plate. The County's official causeway page lists a $72 resident annual plan for eligible Key Biscayne residents and a separate $120 commuter plan for eligible island employees. Both require an active SunPass and qualifying two-axle vehicle.
The bridge rehab project
Miami-Dade's March 26, 2026 public-meeting notice describes proposed rehabilitation of the West Bridges and William Powell Bridge. This is project background, not a current closure notice. It does not publish a standing nightly closure window or establish September work dates. We show it separately from dated closures; check FL511 before a late-night trip.
Special-event closures
Runs, races, and other large events can close lanes or restrict island access, but their dates and traffic-control hours change from year to year. We do not treat a recurring event as a confirmed closure until an organizer, the Village, or the County publishes a current notice. Confirmed notices appear in the schedule card above; also check Village news and the island events calendar before traveling on a major event day.
What FL511 actually shows
FL511 is Florida's official traveler-information system. This guide searches its event feed for Rickenbacker, Bear Cut, Virginia Key, and Crandon, refreshing every five minutes while this page is open. Keyword searches can miss reports and reports can lag road conditions. No matching incidents is not confirmation that every lane is open. The full live map and cameras are linked above.
